Charcoal

My charcoal tells stories through negative space and subtleties of colour.

Using charcoals, pencils, and pastels, I experiment with shading and tone. The close-ups of animals and portraits become an intimate study of faces. More than oils, charcoal allows me to focus on subjects in a way that is bold and confronting.

This medium is incredibly personal to me. It reflects the times when I’ve felt lost and the inclusion of colour symbolises hope. I want to evoke the idea that you cannot escape from love, sadness and hope. I would like to think we can navigate whatever life throws at us.

"For me … I want to convey what is alive between me and the subject."

— Claude Monet
